Costly Cyclone Idai: Over 1,000 dead, $2 billion needed to recover

APRNEWS - In Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, more than 1,000 people were killed, while hundreds of thousands are in need of aid, following the devastating battering by Cyclone Idai.

The World Bank estimates the affected countries will need over $2 billion to recover. The following is an outline of the disaster, according to government and U.N. officials.

Mass graves for Mozambique cyclone victims, death toll at 534

APRNEWS - Mozambican authorities held a mass burial for about forty victims of the tropical cyclone that ravaged the country. The burial took place in the Sussundenga district in the country’s western Manica Province.

The BBC’s reporter in the capital Maputo, said the move was taken because the bodies of the persons were in an advanced state of decomposition.
