Plane, governor’s house torched in PNG violence

APRNEWS - Papua New Guinea has declared a state of emergency in its rugged Southern Highlands after an armed mob went on the rampage, torching a passenger plane and the local governor’s house.

Police said crowds were angered by a court decision to dismiss a petition against provincial governor William Powi’s 2017 election, amid concerns of corruption.

Ally of ousted South African president Zuma steps down

THEGUARDIAN - A key ally of former South African president Jacob Zuma announced Wednesday he would resign as premier of North West province after violent protests over alleged corruption and mismanagement.

Supra Mahumapelo’s resignation was seen as a victory for President Cyril Ramaphosa in a power struggle within the ruling ANC (African National Congress) ahead of elections next year.

South African national government to run strife-torn province

GUARDIAN - South Africa’s national government is to take over the administration of North West province where riots over corruption forced President Cyril Ramaphosa to cut short a trip abroad, parliament said Sunday.

The unrest in the province is one of the first serious challenges to face Ramaphosa, who took office in February promising to stamp out corruption.
