REUTERS - Russia’s Ministry of Defense said on Thursday it would hold a major naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea from Sept. 1 to Sept. 8, the TASS news agency reported, a move that coincides with rising tensions between Moscow and Washington over Syria.

APRNEWS - The captain of the German NGO ship Lifeline, accused of breaking international law by picking up migrants off the Libyan coast, will appear in a Maltese court on Monday, a government spokesman told AFP.

REUTERS - Around 100 people are thought to have drowned from a migrant boat off Libya’s western coast, a coastguard official said on Friday.

The coastguard picked up 14 survivors from the boat just east of the capital, Tripoli, the official said.

REUTERS- A baby boy has been born on board a rescue ship in the Mediterranean. The mother decided to name him 'Miracle'. Almost 2,000 migrants have been rescued by aid agencies and the Italian coastguard and Navy in recent days. Boats have been taking them to the Port of Augusta in Sicily.
