The limits of Macron’s influence in Lebanon

There was no mistaking the symbolism behind French President Emmanuel Macron’s trip to Beirut.

His Monday night arrival in the Lebanese capital marked his second visit in the space of weeks and coincided with the 100th anniversary of the country’s formation as a French colonial protectorate. Macron planted a cedar tree, an iconic emblem at the center of the Lebanese flag, with hopes for Lebanon’s “rebirth.” French fighter jets soared above the city in formation, trailing red and green smoke.

West African bloc chairman calls for Mali junta's cooperation

The military junta in Mali must work with the West African regional bloc to ensure a swift return to civilian rule, Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said on Monday, opening a summit in which Mali’s post-coup progress is high on the agenda.

A group of army colonels has ruled Mali since ousting President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on Aug. 18. No consensus has yet been reached on the make-up and duration of a transitional government ahead of promised elections.

South Africa's MTN to exit Middle East over medium-term

South African mobile operator MTN Group said on Thursday it will be exiting the Middle East over the medium term, starting with the sale of its 75% stake in MTN Syria as part of plans to focus on Africa.

MTN is in advanced discussions to sell the stake in MTN Syria to TeleInvest, which is the minority shareholder in MTN Syria with a 25% holding, Group President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Shuter told media on a conference call as the firm reported its half-year results.

Guinean opposition alleges largescale corruption by President Alpha Condé

A Guinean opposition group is alleging widescale corruption on the part of President Alpha Condé and his administration.

The Collective for the Transition in Guinea (CTG) filed a complaint on the eve of the nomination of the ruling party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

The complaint was filed at the National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF) in Paris.

Chicago rapper FBG Duck shot and killed in city's downtown Area

The gun violence in Chicago has taken yet another rising talent. Rapper FBG Duck was shot and killed today in the Gold Coast area of downtown Chicago.

 

The controversial rapper who has gained notoriety with songs like “Slide” was a fan favorite both in and outside of Chicago. Chicago police spokesperson Tom Ahern said three people were shot on Oak Street between Rush Street and Michigan Avenue around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Russians rush to public bath after lockdown without hot water

Russian women flocked to their small town’s “banya” or public steam sauna when it reopened after the coronavirus lockdown, for the luxury of hot water after going without for six weeks.

The public banya is the only way for many Russians living in smaller towns to wash themselves in comfort as older homes do not have central heating or hot water supplies.

Adesina will not step aside as AfDB president for fresh probe

A former spokesman for the African Development Bank said Dr. Akinwumi Adesina will not step back as the president of the bank after the board supported an independent probe as requested by the U.S.

In a Facebook post, Dr Victor Oladokun, former Communications and External relations Director of the bank said Adesina will not step down as president of the bank.

India launches the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission from May 16,2020.

India will launch the second phase of Vande Bharat Mission from May 16 to 22 under which Air India will operate 149 flights to bring back countrymen from 31 countries.

These will include several places where AI does not have regular flights to like Ukraine, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Nigeria. The other countries from where stranded Indians will be brought back include US, UAE, Canada, UK, Australia, Italy, France, Singapore and Russia.
