Liberia president defends one-year record, despite opposition attacks

APRNEWS - Liberian president George Weah has defended his first year in office stressing that the government’s performance indicated that they had neither disappointed or failed the people.

Weah in delivering his state of the nation address on Monday evening also fended off opposition criticisms of failed promises and superintending over a poor economy leading to hardships and high living cost.

Sirleaf wins prestigious Ibrahim Prize for African leadership

AFP - Former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Monday won the rarely-awarded Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership -- the world's biggest individual prize.

The prize only goes to a democratically-elected African leader who has demonstrated exceptional leadership, served their mandated term and left office within the last three years.

FRANCE24 - Former international football star George Weah was sworn in as Liberia's new president on Monday, in the country's first transition between democratically-elected leaders since 1944.
Weah, 51, took over from Nobel laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who spent 12 years at the helm, steering the West African nation away from the trauma of a civil war.
